Equipment and Protective systems intended for use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres (ATEX) Directive 94/9/EC is a so-called "New Approach" Directive which provides the technical requirements to be applied to equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The Directive has been mandatory from 1st July 2003; it is named after the French "ATmosphere EXplosible".
In very broad terms, there are three pre-conditions for the Directive to apply: the equipment a) must have its own source of ignition; b) be intended for use in a potentially explosive atmosphere (air mixtures); and c) be under normal atmospheric conditions.
The Directive also covers components essential for the safe use and safety devices directly contributing to the safe use of the equipment in scope. These latter devices may be outside the potentially explosive environment.

CAN is a
serial data bus that allows a fast and interference free transmission of
small amounts of data. It is easy to wire and assemble and has an
integrated failure spotting and debugging procedure that makes CAN very
failure proof. Erroneous messages are spotted and repeated. CAN also allows real time applications with short delay times and has a fast transmission speed (1 MB/s at a bus length of 25m). A CAN network has a multimaster ability, which means that every participant can send and receive messages and that defective knots do not disturb the bus communication. The transducers of the JUMO CANtrans series are made with a high-grade steel body that makes them very robust and helps them to maintain a high resistance to vibrations. Like all JUMO products they deliver a very exact measurement for ambitious applications. |

JUMO CANtrans T
(Temperature)
Resistance thermometers are preferentially used for the temperature measuring in liquid or gaseous environments. An important matter is the reliable impermeability during negative and positive pressure. Applications can be found in medical technology, mechanical engineering, drive technology, commercial vehicles, and railways. The measurement data is digitalized, linearized and made available for further use via the CANopen bus protocol (CANSlave). A large variety of useful extra functions can be implemented through the DS 404 device profile.
A double temperature is available, whereas sensors and analogue signal paths are completely redundant. This is a very compact and inexpensive solution for appliances with increased security demands.

Pressure
transducers are used to measure the relative and absolute pressure in
liquid or gaseous environments. The measurement data is digitalized, linearized and made available for further use via the CANopen bus protocol (CANSlave). A sensor monitoring procedure permanently checks the correct functionality of the sensor signal and triggers a priority emergency telegram in case of any failure. The “heartbeat” signal allows an additional monitoring of the functionality of the transducer. The sync-commando enables an additional control over the transmission of the measurement data. A freely selectable filter constant suppresses unwanted signal fluctuation. A large variety of useful extra functions can be implemented through the DS 404 device profile. The time and date of the last attendance can be saved.

CANtrans pT This new combined temperature and pressure transducer is used to measure relative and absolute pressure in liquid or gaseous environments. It also measures the temperature directly at the pressure membrane. The advances of a combined measurement transducer for costs and installation depth are at hand: Only one transducer and only one metering point are needed for two measurement categories. This results in lower costs for commissioning and maintenance, thanks to unified parameterization and diagnosis of the entire system, right down to the sensor level. A sensor monitoring procedure permanently checks the correct functionality of the sensor signal and triggers a priority emergency telegram in case of any failure. The “heartbeat” signal allows an additional monitoring of the functionality of the transducer. The sync-commando enables an additional control over the transmission of the measurement data.
